Tune-yards returns to Whelans on June 17th. The first time I saw her was backing up the Dirty Projectors a few years ago, and I was very surprised to say that the DP’s were not the oddest band in the room that night! She arrived on stage and started howling on the intro to Hatari, and got everyone’s attention. She’s fantastic live, and definitely recommended.
Her new album Whokills is released in mid April, and you can get a sample of what it sounds like, with a free single bizness here. It’s great, go get it. Also, while doing immense amount of research (ok, looking at wiki) I found out that she’s also in the band Sister Suvi, who are well worth checking out here.
Another few gigs of note below:
J Mascis plays Whelans on April 13th.
Mountain Goats play Whelans on May 22nd.
The Cult play the Academy on June 14th
