Croíthe – Whelans – Live Review – 14/03/26

Croíthe are a young band from Dublin who’ve been steadily gaining attention over the last few months with a dark take on post punk.  Support came from Byro, another young band, from the midlands this time.  They played a decent set of pretty rocking songs.  While not the most distinctive, songs like Panic had a classic rock sound, combined with some harmonies that were reminiscent of the likes of Lir.  They finished their set with an almost Hendrix-style number.

Croíthe came on stage next, opening with The Lovers.  Singer Caodán Connolly was the focal point, clearly an intense young fella, all agitated stage moves and occasional pulling at his face.  The band played a decent bunch of brooding songs over searing guitars. The Diver was an early highlight.  This one saw Connolly take a foray into the crowd before throwing in a few lines from The Stooges’ I Wanna Be Your Dog.  Feed My Head was played at breakneck speed, and the anthemic Icarus and Age of Consecration also impressed.

Later in the set, Siren Song was clearly a crowd favourite, before they finished up with Wicked Boy.  A promising gig, I would like to see how a full album from these guys works.
