Loscil – Ash EP – Review
by Killian Laher
Loscil releases some of the most thoughtful ambient music around, and a new EP is always worth looking out for. This is almost a sister EP to this year’s Lake Fire album, and it’s very much in a similar vein for Scott Morgan. It opens with the big, enveloping sound of Smoulder; it’s pretty downbeat, even for him. The powerful Carbon opens moodily before breaking into synth keyboard pulses, while Crown is a calmer affair.
Soot, as the name suggests, is dark as fuck, but the rest of the EP is more relaxed. Cholla drifts serenely for 8 minutes while the almost impenetrable Ember is a solid block of sound, almost impenetrable.
It’s an excellent EP for changing the mood in a room.
