Steve Gunn – Daylight Daylight – Album Review
by Killian Laher
This is the second album of the year from Steve Gunn, and his first collection of songs for four years. Very much of a piece with his instrumental album Music for Writers, it’s amongst the most becalmed music he has put out. It opens with the lovely and peaceful Nearly There, a languid strum that does its unhurried thing very nicely for six and a half minutes.
Morning on K Road is vintage Gunn with gorgeous touches, a bit of guitar here and there, along with some strings. It doesn’t sound like much at first, but then you notice the gorgeous electric guitar that dances around the track; it’s really quite lovely. Another Fade is a chilled-out song full of aimless, yet gorgeous guitar noodling that goes nowhere in particular in a really great way.
The almost meditative title track has a really classic sound to it, brought about by the gentle woodwind instrument and occasional steel guitar running through it. The folky Loon is a little reminiscent of Simon and Garfunkel, while the tranquil final track, A Walk, has a gorgeous piano alongside Gunn’s guitar playing.
It’s a gorgeous album that will soundtrack the tail end of 2025.
