New Irish Music: Arrivalists – From A Piano In Bergen
Pat Barrett is an artist operating on the margins. He seems to be on a creative run at the minute, and has just released an album of piano pieces recorded on a trip to Bergen in Norway. As a collection it leans towards the more ambient side of what Barrett does. Many of the pieces are less than two minutes long and are more about creating a mood. Some are a little on the ‘lo-fi’ side but all have a degree of charm. Last Call For Copenhagen and Someday We’ll Look Back and Laugh are two particularly poignant pieces, while The Rest of Our Lives and The Stars In Bergen are calm, zen-like. You and Me and September features gorgeous birdsong amongst the piano playing.
It works best as a whole, sounding like the onset of winter – low sun, cooler temperatures. It’s available from bandcamp https://thehedgeschools.bandcamp.com/album/from-a-piano-in-bergen
