New Irish Music – The Sentimental Tourists
by Killian Laher
The Sentimental Tourists is a new collaboration between Dave Long (Into Paradise) and ex-Whipping Boy guitarist Paul Page. It’s Page’s first foray into music for 25 years! It’s a four-track EP which opens with And When The Moment Comes. Long’s voice sits well over Page’s metronomic guitar pattern. But it’s the second track, Witches Lane, that really provides the moment of magic. There is some rich, truly gorgeous guitar picking and arpeggios here; less cluttered and clearer than in any of Page’s previous work.
Those hankering after Whipping Boy should check out Happy Beatle, Long’s clever lyrics over fuzzy guitar playing, before the EP ends with the stripped-down, elegiac Don’t Make Me Wait. Hopefully, this EP is an indicator of things to come.
