Two Minutes – Civic Theatre – Review
Billy (Wayne Leitch) and Trisha (Breda McCann) are a married couple. The two are devoted to each other, but one thing is missing in their lives. For the first seven years of their relationship, they did everything possible to avoid getting pregnant, and now they’re doing everything they can to get pregnant! We see their lives as they go on an unexpected journey.
This is the debut play by writer Breda McCann, who also stars in it. Breda has experienced fertility issues in her own life, so it is a subject matter close to her heart. She is also well aware of the trials and tribulations of trying to get pregnant with the help of various nurses and physicians.
The play is a light-hearted comedy that introduces us to the two characters and their world. The characters are a heightened version of reality. Billy is a typical lad, obsessed with football and constantly concerned with what his mates will think. Trisha has one goal on her mind, and that’s to get pregnant! While the characters are a little over the top, there is much truth in what is said. The two visit various doctors to find out why they can’t get pregnant. They also show the couple trying to bring romance back when sex is becoming a chore! They need to have sex when it is the correct time of the month, despite what is going on in their lives.
Although this piece is focused on laughs, it also deals with an important and difficult subject. Fertility can be a major issue for couples, and this work shows some of the many complications. The two actors have good comic timing and a certain chemistry, which adds to the piece.
