Momma – Welcome To My Blue Sky – Album Review
by Killian Laher

The new album from US duo Momma sees the band dial back the heavy rock guitars and lean into their more ‘pop’ sensibilities.  Sincerely opens the album with a mid-90s pop/rock strumalong that builds slowly but doesn’t quite develop into anything.  I Want You (Fever) has rocking guitars struggling to overcome being subsumed by a slick production.  It seems that after the previous album, Household Name, they have tried to smooth off some of their rougher edges.

Rodeo is an improvement, introduced by a strong, heavy riff, while How To Breathe feels like a classic rocky anthem.  Even better is Last Kiss, which barrels along with a magnificent, almost molten riff, and is probably the finest track here.

Their throwaway pop moments are just less memorable. Bottle Blonde and Ohio All The Time are a bit indistinctive; could be anyone, really.  Later, the gentle, sun-dappled guitar picking of Take Me With You appeals before the album finishes with a great big rock anthem, My Old Street, with more welcome heavy guitar.

So the album is a bit of a split release, a compromise between their more rocking instincts and a smoother, poppy sound.  Let’s see which way they go from here.
