Postcards from Scotland – Scottish Independent Music 1983-1995 – Grant McPhee – Book Review
by Killian Laher
Grant McPhee has taken on quite the undertaking with this exhaustive study of independent bands from Scotland in the 1980s and early 1990s. It’s incredibly well-researched as McPhee has spoken to all of the principal members of each of the bands covered. At times, it’s very nerdy – The Green Telescope, Rote Kapelle, Nocturnal Vermin anyone?
Also covered are the early bands of authors Andrew O’Hagan and John Niven. There are many bands mentioned but the one that crops up throughout the book is the Pastels, the much-loved band formed in the 1980s who are still on the go. The evolution of Primal Scream is very interesting, and McPhee has spoken to several former members, though it would have been great to hear from guitarist Jim Beattie.
This book is the very definition of niche. Which is exactly why it’s appealing. Let’s hope there’s a comprehensive Irish equivalent in the works somewhere!
