Bulmers Live at Leopardstown – 27/07/23

“Let me see the colts
That will run next year
Show them to a gambling man
Thinking of the future”

Let Me See the Colts by Bill Callahan

What system do you use to pick your next guaranteed winner at the horses? My favourite is the foolproof pin system (patent pending) where you hold a pin above the racecard and let it fall on the eventual winner. Another method I use is to pick the horse with a funny name or the one in the nicest colours! Strangely, these systems proved quite successful, so maybe there is something in it? Or maybe I was just lucky.

Whatever your knowledge of racing, the Bulmers Live at Leopardstown Festival may be of interest! The concerts have been running through the summer, with an eclectic lineup of bands including Wallis Bird, Keywest and The Undertones. The ticket gives you access to both the racing and the music!

On Thursday night, the Academic were the main act. They arrived on stage twenty minutes after the last race at about 8.45pm. The audience was a mix of racegoers and fans of the band. There was a small crowd already gathered at the stage before the band arrived, who seemed to have little interest in the horses and were focused purely on the four-piece from the outskirts of Mullingar, and in particular the boyish good looks of the lead vocalist Craig Fitzgerald!

I’m reliably informed that the band had just arrived from America several hours before and were travelling to Thailand the next day, so they’re a band starting to gather an international following. They played a set with many of their hits including Why Can’t We Be Friends? and Bear Claws. Out of the remaining bands playing at Leopardstown, the Human League are possibly the main point of interest. Their song ‘Don’t You Want Me’ is one of the finest pop songs of all time!
