Best Screen Elvis –
Michael Shannon avoids the clichés in his performance in Elvis & Nixon. This Elvis is quite moody and more than a little bit dangerous. A man that is used to getting his way. It’s a film with very little in the way of plot, instead it focuses on character. The film is a device to show the abilities of its stars, Shannon and Spacey. The two main actors immerse themselves in this bizarre story to make it an enjoyable watch.
We’re looking to find out who you think is the best screen Elvis. You can see our nominations below…
You can find a fairly full list of those that have played the King here.
Bruce Campbell plays an ageing Elvis impersonator (or possibly the real thing) in the 2002 film Bubba Ho-tep. Bruce only does one style of acting and that’s over the top. If you missed this one when it came out, it comes recommended.
Stephen Jones plays Elvis in the wonderful Mystery Train, directed by Jim Jarmusch. This ghostly apparition appears about four minutes into the Youtube clip below. Maybe not the best version of Elvis, but hard not to love the movie.
Anyone remember this one? Harvey Keitel plays Elvis, or at least someone who thinks he’s Elvis in the 1998 film Finding Graceland.
One of my favourite versions of Elvis is Val Kilmer in True Romance. Elvis regularly gives very, very bad advice.
‘Well I’d kill him, shoot him in the face, put him down like a dog’.
Kurt Russell played Elvis in the admittedly quite dodgy 1979 TV movie, which was bizarrely directed by John Carpenter. He certainly has the moves.
And to finish them all, check out Jack White as Elvis in the 2007 film Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. Stick to the day job buddy.
