They Want My Soul – Spoon – Review

spoon-they_want_my_soul-608x608

In a lot of ways the most unusual thing about this album is how straight forward it is. In a world where we are becoming increasing familiar with bands recording albums with two Ukuleles and percussion made out of arm pit noises, this is a remarkably straight forward affair. It’s music made from guitar, bass and drums and the odd wandering keyboard. So why is it worthy of a mention? I guess it’s a question of quality.

It is the type of music that could easily end up on day time radio, it doesn’t aim to offend or go out of its way to be obscure, it’s good solid indie rock and you can see the band are enjoying what they’re doing. If you’ve followed the band throughout their career (this being their 8th album with the first dating back to 1996) there will be no surprises on this offering. Still, it’s been four years since their last offering and this is something of a welcome blast, a band doing what they enjoy and what they do very well. Don’t dwell too much on the lyrics or look for intricacies of structure, this is a collection of banging indie tunes and really you can’t ask for more. It’s not an album you’ll be listening to in six months time, but for what’s left of the summer, it’s a short, sharp shock. Festival season has another few weeks.
