It’s great to have Merill back. Still no word of her playing Dublin, but Foggy Notions claims he’s working on it, so fingers crossed on that score. She’s stunning live!
This is the first full track off the new album, and has the feel of an anthem to it. I’m loving those drums…
“Water Fountain” (below) shares a rich afro-pop influence with tUnE-yArDs’ past work, and that’s a good thing. Syncopated drums and claps, along with Nate Brenner’s signature funky bass, create layers under Garbus’ varied vocal stylings—from gentle singing in the verses to chanting to excited “whoo-ha”s. As usual, the lyrics are a delight (“He gave me a dollar / A blood-soaked dollar / I cannot get the spot out / But it’s okay, it still works in the store”) and seem to float seamlessly between sincere, sarcastic, and sexually suggestive. “Water Fountain” takes so many twists over the course of its three minutes that when the beginning bass-line returns at the end, you’re surprised it could’ve ever belonged in the same song.”
The album ‘Nikki Nack’ is out on May 6th.
