So what do we have to look forward to this week? Well, it’s a pretty impressive bunch to be honest, more than you could ask for. We’ve got the wonderful Wes Anderson, a good Irish movie (honest), a classic Australian film from the 70’s re-released and a movie that I assumed would be awful, but is possibly not too bad!
The Stag -This film stars lots of really good Irish actors and has been getting very positive notes in most directions, so there we have it, a good Irish movie? Let us rejoice and be merry! Go to see it in the cinema if you can, as this one deserves our love, care and attention!
Summary: A bachelor party weekend in the great outdoors takes some unexpected detours.
Director: John Butler
Stars: Andrew Scott, Hugh O’Conor, Peter McDonald
The Grand Budapest Hotel – Ok, everything Wes Anderson does is a bit style over substance, but really does that matter? Isn’t it great to have a film released every few years that will look truly amazing? He’s off in a weird world of his own at this stage, and I doubt he’ll ever come back, but I’ve been looking forward to this one for months at this stage!
Starring: Adrien Brody, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, F. Murray Abraham, Harvey Keitel, Jeff Goldblum, Jude Law, Léa Seydoux, Mathieu Amalric, Ralph Fiennes, Saoirse Ronan, Willem Dafoe
Summary: The Grand Budapest Hotel recounts the adventures of M. Gustave, a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend. The story involves the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting and the battle for an enormous family fortune—all against the back-drop of a suddenly and dramatically changing continent.
300: Rise of an Empire – Ok, well, maybe I spoke too soon when I said this one was better than expected in the introduction. I guess I was expecting it to be truly awful, and most of the reviews are average to poor, so… yeah. I guess it’s aimed at teenage boys, so if you’re not one of those, move on!
Starring: Andrew Tiernan, Callan Mulvey, David Wenham, Eva Green, Hans Matheson, Jack O’Connell, Lena Headey, Rodrigo Santoro, Sullivan Stapleton
Summary: The Greek general Themistocles battles an invading army of Persians led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes, and Artemisia, commander of the Persian navy.
Wake in Fright – This by all accounts is a lost gem, and is listed as one of Nick Cave’s favorite films of all time. That in itself is enough for me!
Summary: The film tells the story of a British schoolteacher’s descent into personal demoralization at the hands of drunken, deranged derelicts while stranded in a small town in outback Australia.
