12-years-a-slave

A relatively quiet week at the cinema, but I guess it’s early in the year, and you’d want to be brave to go up against one of the main Oscar contenders in 12 years a slave.

This seems to be director Steve McQueen’s third full length movie, after Hunger and Shame, but the former Turner prize winner is now firmly on top of the heap in Hollywood (when you land Brad Pitt in your movie, it’s official!). It’s a very impressive cast with Paul Dano and Paul Giamatti among others, and the reviews are pretty much as good as it gets. Be prepared for it to be a bit slow, I’d say, judging on his other movies, but worth checking out. It’s a simple enough tale of a free man made to live as a slave for …12 year. I guess it’s in the title.

This one just kind of crept out without a lot of fuss, which is unusual when you consider it stars Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman. The director Jonathan Teplitzky seems interesting, in that he’s not really a big name, and this is his first major release. It tells the tale of Colin returning from war slightly damaged (is there any other way?) after life on the ‘Death Railway’ in Japan.  Reviews are pretty average, so up to you.

The Delivery Man is a Vince Vaughan movie. Need I go any further? Have you already decided? Vince is a slacker type that discovers due to an error in a fertility clinic, he is the father of 533 children. The results are hilarious, or slightly less than if the reviews are to be believed!

Metacritic – 44%
