Sean Millar – C48 – Album Review

booklet 4 pagina

This album is an understated affair with a variety of sounds/ moods all linked by Dr. Millar’s soft voice and quick wit. This is Sean’s sixth album to date, and ‘C48’ owes a lot to the production of Joe Chester, who also plays piano on the album. The album also showcases the talents of Steve Wickham on violin, Cian Murphy on double bass and Mark Hugget on drums. The arrangements are generally stripped and simple, with Millar’s guitar taking a prominent part.

Songs such as ‘I’ve never loved somebody’ are simple love songs, and hold true to the positive emotion. There are a number of songs for his kids, an unusual topic for song writing, but quite touching. The lyrics are charming and they are worth your while trying to distinguish.

‘My Kids, you are like gold to me. In you I see my prosperity’

The Devil’s Dirty Rhyme is an old-fashioned country song, that demands foot stamping. The Morning Shift ends the piece, and contains a beautiful violin solo, as well as images of the empty world around him in the early/ late hours of the day.

‘It’s too late in the day for playing games, and I’ve never been that kind anyway’

We spend a lot of time talking about singer songwriters from various destinations on this site, a lot of them from across the Atlantic, so it’s nice to find one closer to home worth banging on about. You can download the single ‘I’ve never loved somebody’ below.
