When I heard about the Oldboy remake, it was certainly with mixed emotions. My first thought was ‘yeah, but it’ll never be as good as the original’. Then I started to think, Spike Lee has had his moments, you never know… Sadly, first thoughts seem to have won out, with some shocking reviews around (I particularly like the zero star review in the New York Observer). A part of me still wants to see it, but maybe I should just go back and watch the original.
Frozen is the Disney film for the Christmas, where you get to follow Anna and Kristoff on an epic journey (why are their journeys always epic in these things?). Road movies seem to be favoured in animation terms recently, with the Croods etc. The reviews are very positive, so steal a child and bring them along! (Note: This does not give you permission to steal a child).
Alexander Payne of Sideways and the Savages fame is back with Nebraska. This is another road movie, with “an aging, booze-addled father makes the trip from Montana to Nebraska”. The reviews are pretty amazing actually, so definitely one to see.
Harry Potter stars in Kill your Darlings as Allen Ginsberg. Seriously, what is Harry up to? And can he not just solve any problems with his magic? The reviews are pretty average.
Scatter my Ashes at Bergdorf’s looks a documentary of merit. It’s got a lots of famous folk in it also, so see what they’re really like (kinda).
And the last one I’ll mention this week is ‘The Swell Season‘. The story of Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová and their rise to fame! It’s good to see Glen do well, gives us all hope, doesn’t it? If you keep knocking at the door…
