When Sky launched its Living channel it was all pink and fluffy and seemed to aim solely for the female market with its choice of branding and programs. It is currently undergoing a complete re-brand and has a great schedule for the autumn season.
First up is The Blacklist with everyone’s favourite love-to-hate 80’s icon James Spader. The premise of the series is what would happen is one of the FBI’s most wanted surrendered himself. Spaders character, Reddington, claims that the FBI and himself have the same interest, getting rid of dangerous criminals and terrorists. However he is only interested in talking to one agent, a rookie profiler called Elizabeth Keen. After the FBI bring down a terrorist he provides information on, Reddington reveals that he has made a list over the past two decades he has made a list of criminals and terrorists he believes matter the most and he calls this list The Blacklist. The Blacklist is on Friday’s at 9pm.
Sky have a brand new adaptation of Dracula staring Jonathan Rhys Meyers. This ten part series reintroduces Dracula as an American entrepreneur who arrives in London and maintains that he wants to bring modern science to Victorian society. In reality he is seeking revenge on those who betrayed him centuries earlier. As his plans move to fruition he falls hopelessly in love with a woman he believes is a resurrection of his long-dead wife.
Returning to our screens for a second season is Elementary with Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Lu. This modern day adaptation sees the super sleuth in New York and although not a patch on the BBC series Sherlock, it is certainly entertaining.
An interesting new original comedy series is Doll and Em The comedy is created by and starring Emily Mortimer and her real-life best friend, actress Dolly Wells. Set in LA, the series will be an intimate, funny portrait of female friendship and will feature a number of high-profile celebrity cameos.
Sky also commissioned a series called Drama Matters, with shows written by well known and critically acclaimed British screenwriters. There are five drama’s altogether: Lawless (featuring Suranne Jones), The Psychopath Next Door (featuring Anna Friel), The Last Witch, Talking To The Dead and Reubenesque. Each of the five dramas will be a celebration of diverse, bold and compelling characters, each with their own story to tell. Drama Matters is on Saturday at 10pm.
