There’s a distinctly Scottish air to the new releases this week, with the top two hailing from Edinburgh. It’s a rare occasion, as the Scottish film industry isn’t exactly a powerhouse. Let’s see what they’ve got.
Filth is based on the novel of the same name from Irvine Welsh and tells the story of a ‘dirty cop’ in Edinburgh and stars James McAvoy. The reviews are largely positive, but a part of me doesn’t believe them! I’m not quite sure why, but it’s possibly the fact that I got to about page 50 in the novel before getting bored of all the drugs/ violence, maybe it’ll work better as a movie.
If musical based on the works of the Proclaimers and telling the story of two young me returning to Edinburgh after time in Afghanstan sounds like your kinda thing, then do I have the film for you? Sunshine on Leith sounds a terrible idea in my mind, the reviews are pretty average, but if you’re a musical fan…
Our review of How I Live Now is here. It’s an unusual fish and is very different from any of the other young adult movie you’ll see in the cinema this or any other year. Here’s what the critics thought.
Metro Manila is receiving a lot of love from the critics, and tells the story of a family leaving northern Philippines and moving to Manila. Expect lashings of violence and deprivation in this tale from English director Sean Ellis.
The to do list is a movie written and directed by Maggie Carey, and looks the light hearted type! The story of a young lady finding her way and working to her goal of losing her virginity to Rusty Waters.
They say to make documentaries on dying worlds, and unfortunately Irish pubs are one of those. This is a documentary into the world of banter and good Guinness. The reviews are largely positive.
The perverts guide to Ideology is a great name for a film, I’d go to see it on that basis alone! It bills itself as the “ultimate lesson of psychoanalysis – and fiction cinema”, and again gets pretty good reviews. Maybe this should have been at the top of the list.
