It’s another good week at the cinemas of Ireland, and there’s more than enough to choose from, for most people anyway!
From the first time I saw this trailer for Ain’t them Bodies Saints, one word resonated, Badlands! It seems to be mentioned in more than a few reviews also, but most people seem to enjoy it none the less. This is a new film directed by David Lowery, who is mainly known as an editor, and actually edited the confusing movie from last week, Upstream Color. It stars Batman’s younger brother, Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara.
The Great Beauty looks another interesting one, it’s the story of an ageing writer in Rome, and is directed and written by ‘This must be the Place’ director Paolo Sorrentino. Ok, ‘This must be the place’ was a bit rubbish, but he made ‘Il Divo’ before that. The Reviews are universally positive.
Any day now is set in the 1970’s and tells the story of a gay couple trying to adopt a down syndrome child. It sounds a depressing tale, and it is! The reviews are a bit mixed, so I’ll leave it up to you. It stars Alan Cumming, which is a positive, and is directed by Travis Fine.
More than Honey is a documentary about sweet things. Ok, it could really be about anything, with a name like that, but it’s about Bees! The narration of John Hurt is reason enough to go. It tells the tale of the ongoing problems in the Bee world, and the death of hives.
I was expecting this to be one of those universally loved movies, that would run and run, but sadly the reviews are very average. Museum Hours tells the tale of a museum guard befriending a traveller to his city, Vienna.
What to say of Riddick, you know it’s going to be crap, right? It’s actually by the director of Pitch Black, and stars Vin Diesel, so stars all the usual people. It looks a fun B movie, if you want to turn your brain off for a while.
