Gavan O’Herlihy has starred in a wide variety of movies and TV shows, from ‘Never say never again’ to ‘Superman III’, and from ‘Twin Peaks’ to ‘Star Trek: Voyager’. He started his career in Happy Days, as the older brother of Richie Cunningham, Chuck. The character was later written out of the show and was simply never mentioned again in the later series, a term that has become known as Chuck Cunningham Syndrome.

He’s a name you rarely hear mentioned as famous Irish actor, but he was born in Dublin in 1954. He returns to the stage in his home town as Pozzo in ‘Waiting for Godot’, as part of the Dublin Theatre Festival. It runs at the Gaiety Theatre Dublin from Oct 2nd to 6th.

“Gare St Lazare Players Ireland are internationally regarded to be among the finest interpreters of Beckett’s work and have worked extensively in Europe for many years. This October, in conjunction with Dublin Theatre Festival, they mark the 60th anniversary of Waiting for Godot with a new production of Samuel Beckett’s masterpiece at the Gaiety Theatre.

“Godot is the first play I ever saw and it has always been very important to me,” says director Judy Hegarty Lovett, the first Irish director to direct a major production of the play in over thirty years. “To direct it at Dublin Theatre Festival for a new generation is an exhilarating challenge.”
