Not a bad week at the cinema, we have a blockbusters that the critics didn’t really like, a couple of off beat indie releases and even a Hollywood buddy movie. I guess that’s most of the boxes ticked, so let’s get down to it.
At what point during the filming of the sequel to the extremely violent film Kiss Ass did Jim Carey realise that the new movie was extremely violent? Well, it seems to be a months after filming finished, to be precise.
“I did Kick-Ass 2 a month b4 Sandy Hook and now in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence. My apologies to others involve[d] with the film. I am not ashamed of it but recent events have caused a change in my heart.”
Said Mr. Carey via the gift of tweet, and maybe he did just change his mind, or maybe he just didn’t want to do the publicity tour, the same questions again and again.
Kick Ass 2 received poor to average reviews in most quarters and a lot of comment about the violence.
Kuma is set in Turkey and tells the story of a wedding that turns out to be a sham. It is a story about the clash of perspectives and worlds, and looks beautifully shot and quite haunting, even if there doesn’t seem to be a trailer with English subtitles in existence. Hopefully they’ll be in English in the cinema, it might be a struggle otherwise.

The Big City is a re-release of the 1963 gem that you probably have never seen, I know I haven’t! It tells the story of life in Calcutta for a struggling family.
Part of me still considers Denzel Washington a good actor, despite all the evidence to the contrary. In 2 guns, a DEA agent and a naval intelligence find themselves on the run after a botched attempt to infiltrate a drug gang. Denzel we expect better of, but Mark Wahlberg, not so much.
Call Girl tells the story of a new recruit to the oldest trade in the world, the reviews are pretty positive, so could be worth a visit.

The film Cars seems to be completely unwatchable for anyone over about 5 years of age. I’ve never heard a movie that more parents seem to give out about, but the little people seem to love it, so that’s all that matters, right? Disney have followed it up with this sequel of sorts, Planes. Does it matter what the Critics think? They don’t like it, but most of them are over five.
