It’s old news at this stage, as it was announced on Tuesday, but it’s only happening today, so I thought it was worth a mention. That and the fact that there’s not a movie worth going to released today! The Lighthouse’s new web site is here, and as you can’t even google it yet, it seems to be a secret. The booking page doesn’t work, and they don’t seem to have a phone line, so you’ll have to book in person for the time being.
The cinema itself is being run by Element Pictures, who were behind a lot of the best Irish releases of recent times, including the Guard and Garage. We wish them all the best, and it’s a great addition to Dublin Life to have it back.
For the first week, they’re showing the Artist, Shame and J Edgar, as I’ve seen the first two and have no interest in the third, it’ll be a while before I go. Why make a film about J Edgar and not show him in a dress, I’ll never know. You can hear Leonardo doing his awful accent/ imitation below. [Update: One scene in a dress, I apologize. I went to J Edgar, so you don’t have to. I jumped in front of a bullet meant for you! Avoid, you’ve been warned. Nearly as bad as if Oliver Stone had made it. ]
Other suspect releases this week include Coriolanus, which is Ralph Fiennes’ first attempt at directing, and looks very suspect and gets average reviews! Madonna’s new one W.E. (which is on at the lighthouse as well, but I’m pretending it isn’t), Haywire and the Sitter. All rubbish, i’d suspect.
