Movies – 06-01-12 – The Artist

I first heard about this movie while I was checking the ‘best of 2011’ movies for critics stateside, and it featured on almost all of them. I’m sure it will be added to most of the ‘best of 2012’ lists, if we can remember back that far in December or so. It’s an almost silent french movie, set in Hollywood during 1927-32, and follows the decline of a silent movie star and the rise of another. Expect a lot of dance sequences!

Surviving Life is the great Jan Svankmajer’s tale of love and dreams, and as far as I’m concerned you really can’t go far wrong with Jan. I first fell for his daft stop motion animation on his Mtv shorts in the early 90’s and while little has changed, they’re always lots of fun to watch.

Otherwise, it’s a quiet enough week. Sadly, the Iron Lady starring Merly Streep as Margaret Tatcher gets rough to average reviews in most spots, it sounded like it would be great but was described as bloodless and without a cutting edge in the two reviews I saw. Goon is a comedy about ice hockey, that gets decent reviews but I doubt I’ll ever see.
