Thomas Campbell is an artist and filmmaker who shoots surf movies entirely on 16mm film. Sprout, his second movie is one of my favourite movies of all time (not just surf-related). Campbell has a knack for choosing excellent music to go with his beautiful footage. Sprout, for example, had a soundtrack that included Tortoise, The Shins, Calexico and Hope Sandoval. Not exactly standard surf film fare. His most recent offering, The Present, is also pretty cool but for me it doesn’t quite reach the highs of Sprout. It is still excellent though particularly if you love music, surfing and film. To get an idea of his very different use of music in surf films, check out the trailer for The Present. For some reason, this gives me goosebumps… in a good way.
